Black Cock with Geranium Leaves

The shiny feathers of birds pick up colors from reflections: the “black” feathers here have subtle greens, blues and purples in them, much richer in color and more interesting than pure black fabrics. None of them are solid colors either. It is hard as a teacher to get new students to use enough variety in making the fabric choices for animals and birds – they seem stuck intellectually on the word “black”, rather than using their eyes to see what the other possibilities are.
