While I was choosing and cutting the fabrics for this red hen, I remembered an African fabric that had been on the shelf for many years with small red chicks on it. The chicks were about the right scale for my hen, but spaced out in an odd geometric pattern with other images. A lot of cutting and resewing was necessary to make the flock at the bottom of this quilt. The tops of the chicks, where they overlap the light leafy background, are appliquéd.
