The pieced bear block finishes 11" x 11.5" and can be bordered
to make a charming small (20" x 24") wallhanging or baby quilt.
The piecing is all straight seams, using my freezer paper method
for the piecing. The pattern contains the block at full size and complete directions
for sewing the block and assembling the quilt, as well as directions for a larger
project of nine pieced bears. My freezer paper method is as accurate to sew as
paper foundation piecing, and offers a number of advantages over that method.
Binding directions are included as well as suggestions for quilting. The size
of the project makes it very appropriate for beginning hand or machine quilters.
Supplies needed are listed on the back of the pattern.
The pattern is a 2-sided 17" x 22" sheet plus a full color cover
illustrating the project in a 6" x 9" plastic bag ready for hanging. Peaceable
Bear is an easy project for a beginner, and a good class project for a shop or
teacher to offer to a group.
The single Peaceable Bear quilt is a great way to take advantage
of large-scale prints to make dynamite borders as you can see from these examples.
The bear can be easily adapted for different tastes from pastels to bold colors,
large-scale prints, or seasonal and novelty fabrics. It's a great way to use
the wonderful fabrics available to today's quiltmakers.
As a bonus, the block can also include a three-dimensional tongue
for the bear, made as a faced flap or from a single layer of ultrasuede. The
directions for this are included in the pattern as well. This is an "extra-credit" step
- the bear comes out fine without the tongue - but it does makes a playful, and
easily done, extra detail.
